Abstract
Safe patient transfer in medical facilities and in-home care environments is critical for preventing fall-related injuries and reducing musculoskeletal strain among healthcare workers and caregivers. However, traditional mechanical and hydraulic patient lift systems are often excessively bulky, costly, and difficult to deploy in space-constrained settings.
In this project, we designed and built a functional, miniaturized patient lift machine using additive manufacturing (3D printing) combined with precision electromechanical actuation. The system is powered by an Arduino Uno REV3 ICSP microcontroller board paired with an Arduino A4988 stepper motor driver, enabling high-torque, stable vertical lifting and horizontal movement control.
Experimental testing demonstrated enhanced lifting and moving capabilities compared to conventional designs while simultaneously achieving a significant reduction in overall equipment size and weight. The project was presented at the Engineering and Science Fair of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (2022) and recognized with the Consolation Prize.
